Scotland plans to reach zero road deaths by 2050.
October 2020
The Scottish Government is aiming to halve the number of road deaths by 2030 and achieve zero fatalities by 2050, in order to give Scotland the best road safety performance in the world.
The current road safety strategy ends this year after achieving significant success - road deaths have seen a reduction of 42% since the baseline.
The Scottish government now targets to go further by applying a safe systems approach to create a 'forgiving' road environment, which has an allowance for human error without resulting in death or serious injury.
Under the plans, key performance indicators will recover:
- Percentage of motorists driving within the speed limit
- Percentage of drivers not distracted by a handheld mobile phone/Sat Nav or in-car entertainment system
- Percentage of vehicle occupants wearing a seatbelt or child restraint system correctly
and more.
A National Road Safety Improvement Fund, accompanied by route risk mapping with proactive road assessments, could be established and added to help road authorities meet the targets.
