On the road again
January 2020
Each year WDM® carries out the high-speed data collection survey for the New Zealand Transport Agency.
The Company has done this for the past seven years and the most recent survey started on the 19th November in Hawkes Bay. The trucks moved to the South Island on the 15th January and the survey is due to be finished by the 8th February. The team are on schedule to deliver the validated data into RAMM by the end of February.
This survey is a vital step to improving road safety and developing solid asset management plans. Some regions have already received their skid resistance data and can start working on delivering safer outcomes to our customers.
Some details of the survey:
- We survey about 22,000 lane km each year
- The survey takes two trucks about three months to complete
- The truck carries about 8,500 litres of water. This is 50% more than a fire truck.
- Water needs to be replenished every 100km or so.
- Survey speeds are between 45-80kph
- The computer power required to collect and process the data is equivalent to 1,000 home computers
