A Safer, Smarter Alternative to Manual Inspection
Manual road inspections can be subjective, inconsistent, and disruptive. Road Assessment Vehicles (RAVs) provide a safer, high-speed alternative-capturing repeatable, objective condition data that supports maintenance planning, network performance analysis, and compliance with UK National Indicators.
Developed and operated by WDM®, RAVs are a proven solution for efficient condition monitoring across both principal and classified roads. By automatically detecting cracking, rutting, and surface deterioration, they reduce the need for on-foot inspections and deliver richer insights without disrupting traffic flow.
Each survey delivers:
- Surface roughness in the left-hand wheel path
- Macrotexture across left, centre, and right wheel paths
- Wheel path rutting, measured with 20 sensors across 3.2 metres
- Transverse profile and edge deterioration
- Longitudinal gradient, horizontal curvature, and lane crossfall
- Differentially corrected GPS aligned to OSGRs
- Forward-facing video every 5 metres
- Automatic crack detection using high-resolution machine vision
