W.D.M. Limited is a unique family-owned Company, which has developed over the last five decades to become recognised as a world leader in the highway asset management sector.
The Company was founded in 1945 by the late Chairman, Mr L.A.J. Gardiner, MBE, and its approach and growth has been based on strong family values and delivering on its promise.
The Company specialises in designing equipment to monitor highway pavements and assess maintenance needs and the fourth generation of the family is already helping it evolve and adapt for the future.
Initially, WDM® set out to provide engineering support for industry and government and expanded rapidly in the 1950’s and 1960’s, designing, manufacturing and installing high-energy physics, high vacuum, remote and mechanical handling, hypersonic wind tunnel and gas purification equipment.
However, WDM® s development and manufacture of the SCRIM® road survey machine, for the Transport and Road Research Laboratory, proved a watershed in the Company’s development and a change of direction.
Since 1972, its research and development team has used its unrivalled experience and technical expertise to increase the range of advanced technology equipment, software and surveying services. WDM® is today the UK’s leading manufacturer of highway survey machines.
The 1970’s saw the development of a Survey Services Department, which used the Company’s equipment to provide high quality routine monitoring surveys. Additional expertise was developed in manual inventory, condition and safety surveys, using hand-held computers.
During the 1980’s and 1990’s, the Company introduced a Consultancy Service to provide a complete highway maintenance management service for clients in the United Kingdom and overseas and the development of the international role of the Company has continued during the 1990's and 2000’s.
This has seen the further expansion of the Computer Services Department to include the provision of comprehensive computerised highway maintenance and integrated asset management systems. These link road and highway condition data with accidents, structures, customer services, inventory, routine road and pavement maintenance, works orders, street works and street lighting.
WDM® now has offices in New Zealand, where it has been providing survey services for more than two decades, and in the US, where it has set up a subsidiary business, WDM USA.
The next generation of the Gardiner family are now both involved in the day to day activity of the Company, ensuring the legacy continues.
