Our Story
W.D.M. Limited was founded in 1945 by the late Chairman, Mr. L.A.J. Gardiner, MBE, to provide engineering solutions for industry and government. In the 1950s and 1960s, the Company expanded rapidly, designing and manufacturing high-energy physics, vacuum, hypersonic wind tunnel, and mechanical handling equipment. The development of the SCRIM® road survey vehicle for the Transport and Road Research Laboratory marked a turning point in the 1970s, driving the growth of advanced technology and road survey services.
By the 1980s and 1990s, WDM introduced consultancy services, delivering road monitoring and maintenance management for UK and international clients. Its global role continued to grow, and in 2017, the SCRIM® vehicle was rated “exceptional” by the US Federal Highways Administration. WDM USA, established in 2018, began offering survey services to US highway authorities in 2019. The Company’s Computer Services Department now provides integrated road maintenance and asset management systems worldwide.
Today, the business remains in the Gardiner family, with Chris Gardiner, the founder’s grandson, serving as Managing Director, continuing its legacy of innovation and excellence.
