For the last five decades W.D.M. Limited has been specialising in designing equipment to monitor highway pavements and assess maintenance needs and is widely recognized as a world leader in its sector.

The company was founded in 1945 by the late Chairman, Mr L.A.J. Gardiner, MBE to provide engineering support for industry and government.
It expanded rapidly in the 1950’s and 1960’s, designing, manufacturing and installing high-energy physics, high vacuum, remote and mechanical handling, hypersonic wind tunnel and gas purification equipment.
Against a background of high quality standards, WDM® began developing and manufacturing the Sideway-force Coefficient Routine Investigation Machine for the Transport and Road Research Laboratory.
It proved a watershed in the Company’s subsequent development and since 1972, its research and development team has used its unrivalled experience and technical expertise to increase the range of advanced technology equipment, software and surveying services.
The 1970’s saw the development of a Survey Services Department which used the Company’s equipment to provide high quality routine monitoring surveys. Additional expertise was developed in manual inventory, condition and safety surveys using hand-held computers.
During the 1980’s and 1990’s, the Company introduced a Consultancy Service to provide a complete highway maintenance management service for clients in the United Kingdom and overseas.
Further emphasis has been placed on the development of the international role of the Company during the 1990's and 2000’s.
This has seen the further expansion of the Computer Services Department to include the provision of comprehensive computerised highway maintenance and integrated asset management systems.
